The Endowment at University of the Ryukyus

Message from the President

The 17th President

Mutsumi Nishida
In 1950, the University of the Ryukyus was established on the remains of Shuri Castle with the hopes of Okinawan people that it would grow into an institution serving the people of the Ryukyu Islands and contribute to society. This university, located in Japan’s only island prefecture, has a unique history and distinct characteristics not seen at other national universities. Its fundamental premise has always been the commitment to serve as “a university for the Okinawan community”. The mission of the university is to become a hub of education and research that contributes to Okinawa, Japan, and the world. The university aims to help create a prosperous future society in collaboration with local communities and to serve as an outstanding international center of education and research in the Asia-Pacific region. By pursuing such a vision for the university and expanding its management base, the university is making every effort to cultivate capable human resources. We aim for these people to become bridges that connect Okinawa and the world, and for them to contribute to the advancement of academic research. As a higher education institution in Okinawa, the university serves as a place of hope and learning for future generations. In order to continue to help these future generations achieve their potential, it is crucial that we actively re-invest in the university’s infrastructure and the human resources that support this endeavor. This is a community-wide effort that is a source of considerable pride for every individual involved. Developing a well-educated population is essential for the foundation of regional development. In order to secure the necessary financial resources for these efforts, we have established the University of the Ryukyus Fund and are now seeking support. I strongly believe that your generous support will help us to inspire younger generations, as well as encourage and motive their efforts to sustain and develop a progressive and prosperous society. Toward these ends, your understanding and continued support would be deeply appreciated.
